Smart Camping Tips
December 30, 2013
Camping is a great activity that can be done all year round. If you have never considered camping during the winter months, we urge you to think again! Camping in the winter can be a wonderful adventure if you are prepared and have a few tricks up your sleeve. Our Black Hills campground offers year round camping and lodging, and here are some smart camping tips that will help making your Black Hills camping trip a success:
Cover the Bases. To isolate heat and make a comfortable floor in your tent, simply use floor foam tiles shaped like giant puzzle pieces. Thick yoga mats are great to sleep on and are also more flexible and portable than usual foam mats used for camping. Don’t forget to keep the tent vents open at night, even though it is freezing out. Otherwise the condensation created by your breath will create frost inside the tent.
The Light Situation. Use duct tape (what else?!) to strap a head lamp onto a jug of water to create a soft reading light in the tent.
Read up on the Plants. Bring a plant book with you so you are able to identify poisonous plants and berries. Some plants can cause serious medical conditions when ingested or just by touching them, and it is better to be safe than sorry!
Keep it Sanitary. Store toilet rolls in old coffee tins. Simply cut a whole on the side so you can pull out the paper without taking the whole roll out every time nature calls. Space is usually limited when camping, so instead of making room for regular sized toiletries you can bring small, travel sized shampoos and toothpaste. Instead of bringing a whole bar of soap, you can use a vegetable peeler and peel off single-use soap slices to bring on your camping trip. If you are away for more than a couple of days, it can be convenient to be able to wash up some clothes. An bucket and a plunger combined with water and biodegradable washing powder will make an excellent substitute for a washing machine. Just keep in mind that it can be a bit of a hassle to make the clothes dry if it is below freezing.
Cook Like a Pro. Just because you are away from your kitchen at home, doesn’t mean you should compromise flavor and taste when cooking. Bring spices in emptied tic-tac containers, bring pre-made pancake mix that just requires adding water, cook canned cinnabuns in hollowed-out oranges, and never underestimate the greatness of tin foil to preserve, cook, and keep food warm.
