Black Hills Vacation: Traveling with KidsApril 28, 2014
Traveling with your family is a perfect way to bond, have fun, and experience adventure. Traveling gives your children an excellent opportunity for them to discover new, exciting places while you spend quality time together. Traveling with kids does not have to be a stressful ordeal – as long as you are organized and maybe a little innovative. A Black Hills vacation is perfect when traveling with kids because of all the outdoors activities and rich culture the Black Hills has to offer. Here are some top tips for traveling with kids:
Stock up on Snacks
Good travel snacks are apples, oranges, raisins, carrots, grapes, granola bars, and mini water bottles. You want to pick snacks that are easy to carry along on adventures and ones that will please your kids. Avoid snacks with too much sugar…or you may just regret it in the long run.
Ask the Kids
Make decisions together as a family on activities to do, sights to see, and where to dine. Doing this will allow the kids to feel not only important, help them remain attentive, but build excitement. Get the maps out and talk about where you would like to go. You can even do a ‘Pros/Cons’ list about a few different places and then vote.
Plan, Plan, Plan…
Before your trip you should plan ahead and do a little research before the trip to find fun, suitable activities and events at or on your way to your destination. Rapid City has many child friendly attractions to offer, and there is so much to do on your Black Hills vacation at Palmer Gulch when traveling with kids from waterslides, mini golf, nightly movies, and more. Our Black Hills campground has many fun things happening for the whole family! Planning ahead will help things go smoothly and you will be able to fit many different adventures into your Black Hills vacation.
Planning ahead can keep things interesting but no one likes to hear a child exclaim, “I’m bored!” Avoid this, especially during down time like in the RV, by bringing new toys and books for children. These new items will keep their attention better. You can also let them borrow your Ipad or MP3 player to listen to music or play games while you are on the road.
Hand Sanitizer, Hand Sanitizer, Hand Sanitizer
We can’t say it enough…you can never go wrong with hand sanitizer! Traveling with kids can be messy, literally! Avoid the mess and the germs by using wet wipes or hand sanitizer before meals and other snacks! Also keeping tissues handy, especially in the RV, is a top idea in case something spills or someone sneezes!
Play it Safe
It’s better to be safe than sorry, and this old saying goes along even on your Black Hills vacation! You should always pack a first aid kit along with any medications you or your family may need. Have this kit with you, especially if you are outside and doing activities like hiking. Also make sure to inspect your children for ticks and bug bites several times a day. Insect repellant and sunscreens are also a must to pack! If you are making a trip to a national park or outdoor recreational area, walk around the area together to get familiar with the area and establish strict ground rules and safety boundaries. Point out landmarks that are easily recognizable and instruct your children what to do if they get lost. This will help traveling with kids to be easier and allow you to focus on all of the fun of your Black Hills vacation!
